THE HISTORY OF THE ADVENT WREATH
can be found here. It's not as old as you might think, and it wasn't a Catholic custom at its beginning. There are a variety of traditions associated with its various components, including the use of blue candles and the Christ candle. In the Orthodox Church it has six candles instead of four.
At Mass last Sunday I noticed that the Advent wreath has three blue and one red votive light in place of just candles.
