THE CATHOLIC SCHOOL UNIFORM

The Canadian Press reports on the changing appearance of the Catholic high school uniform. Skirts seem to be a problem (rolling the waisteband) that is disappearing from the uniform scene, replaced either with jumpers or slacks. Some schools require saddle shoes and penny loafers. Others are allowing athletic shoes for comfort.

One school has switched from sweaters to hoodies.

A Philadelphia student was happy with the retro style seen on "American Bandstand" kids until discovering it was the uniform style of West Catholic High School.

Brings up an interesting question. Should the school uniform reflect contemporary conservative dress style or should the uniform reflect the style of the school uniform? Is the uniform about conservative dress or school identification? Are we trying to make Catholic school students appear modest and respectful or is the uniform about students looking generic? Perhaps some of the uniform wars are caused by not clearly defining the purpose of the clothing.
