BISHOP TOD D. BROWN GOING TO COURT
Bishop Tod D. Brown is expected to appear in court today for a hearing to determine whether he should be held in contempt of court in connection with a lawsuit filed against the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange.
At issue is whether Brown should be held in contempt for sending Monsignor John Urell to Canada for psychological treatment before he could complete a deposition.
The reason this item caught my attention is contained in the final two paragraphs. Orange has settled sexual abuse lawsuits for a total of $100 million for 90 victims. That equals roughly a million dollars per victim, which appears to be or to have been the going rate in California. However according to the last sentence in the article, four more lawsuits were settled on Friday "for nearly $7 million." Does this mean that the going rate has jumped to one and three-quarter million per victim?
