Emergency Cleveland Ordinance Seeks Meeting with Bishop Lennon
On June 11, 2007, the City of Cleveland passed emergency Ordinance No. 997-07, effective on June 15, 2007, urging that the City Council conduct a meeting with local Catholic Bishop Richard Lennon and the Diocese of Cleveland concerning the Diocese's new plan creating church clusters and threatening to close up to 48 parishes. The City Ordinance indicates that it may suffer a disproportionate share of closings despite the fact that "parish communities and schools play a vital role in maintaining racially and ethnically diverse neighborhoods and communities..." The City Ordinance also states that Church closures would lead to greater flight and migration out of the City, which would in turn harm neighborhoods and the quality of life for remaining Cleveland residents. Information on the new clustering plan can be found at the following link.

Will the Council try to halt the closings? Wouldn't that be interesting!
