AFTER KATRINA

The Catholic Archdiocese of New Orleans plans to lay off many of its 9,000 full-time employees -- just how many isn't known just yet.
First, archdiocese officials want to finish the task of locating employees forced to evacuate by Hurricane Katrina, William Maestri, superintendent of schools for the archdiocese, said on Monday.

All employees should check in with the archdiocese by Oct. 3 to remain eligible for severance pay, he said.

After employees check in, various archdiocese offices will develop recommendations about which workers are essential, and those recommendations will be evaluated to determine if those positions can be funded, he said.

Maestri said he couldn't predict how many employees will lose their jobs. "I think it would be speculative, and I would not want to be held to that, because I really don't know at this time," he said.
